So, this morning, I went to the pharmacy, which is in the same building as my doctor's office, to get my heartburn medicine. I do the Israeli line dance (meaning shuffling around to keep people from cutting and at one point telling a lady that I'm before her so please stop trying to push in front), I get my prescription and go outside. As I get outside, I see these two ladies walking up - one obviously in some kind of trouble is leaning very heavily on the other lady. So, I asked if they needed some help and the first lady, the one who was fine, just told me to wait. So, she left the 2nd lady who immediately grabbed me and started leaning on me. This is not a small lady we're talking about either. So, I'm standing there wondering if I should try to maneuver this lady on into the doctor's office or just wait. I asked her what was wrong but she couldn't/wouldn't answer. So, not being sure, I decided to just wait and see what happened. Well, then, the first lady comes out of the doctor's office, stops and says something in Russian to the 2nd lady, then just walks away.
Now, my Hebrew is improving but my Russian is nothing beyond nyet. So, I'm standing there wondering what's happening when the lady starts to sob out loud and then begins to sag. As I realize that I can no longer hold her up, I also realized that while my Emergency medicine course taught me how to say call 101 (the Israeli version of 911), I don't know how to just plain ask for help or even for a doctor! Fortunately, just as we were both beginning to go over and I was beginning to say, "Oh Crap!@#$!", one of the doctors came out the door of the clinic. Unfortunately, it was not the one I see, who speaks English. So, he's rattling off all these questions at me in Hebrew, I'm trying to sort thru his words and explain that I don't know what's going on, I was just passing by, and in the meantime, people are starting to stop and stare. Finally, the doctor gets disgusted with me and tells me to go away. Nice man!
Then as I'm walking back to school, trying to sort out all the things he said, and trying to figure out what I might have done differently, I hear someone shouting in Hebrew, look up and see a flag pole about to drop on my head. However, I managed to move and it must have missed me by at least 3 inches. So, now I'm back at school wondering if it would be worth it to stop drinking coffee so I don't have to take the heart burn medicine because the trips to the doctors office are just getting to be too much excitement - especially in the midst of finals.
Ah well, wouldn't want life to be boring, so coffee shop here I come! At least there were no bombs this morning. :)
